Gravel_-_Dikkebus

This challenging gravel bike route takes you on an unforgettable journey through the historical and natural splendor of the Westhoek. Starting and ending at the Stroroute in Roeselare, the route leads you along forests, lakes, and traces of World War I. This route is ideal for lovers of history, nature, and challenging gravel paths.

First stage: Roeselare to Zonnebeke

The ride begins at the Stroroute in Roeselare and immediately heads toward Zonnebeke. The first highlight is the castle park, where we cycle along the castle surrounded by a peaceful environment of green trees and ponds. Afterwards, we continue toward the Polygon wood. The densely wooded forest offers beautiful gravel paths and reminds us of the grim history of the region.

Second stage: Hill 62 and Sanctuary Wood

After the Polygon wood, the route takes us past Hill 62 and the Sanctuary Wood Museum. The impressive trenches and the nearby Sanctuary Wood Cemetery pay respect to the fallen and offer a significant stop. We then continue along the Zillebekevijver, where you can enjoy the view of the bubbling water and the surrounding nature.

Third stage: Fortress of Ypres and the Dikkebusvijver path

Once near Ypres, we get the opportunity to see a piece of the old city wall, which now serves as a walking and cycling path. From here, we take the Dikkebusvijver path, which leads us to the Dikkebusvijver, an excellent gravel path along the Kasteelbeek, where we have wonderful views of the surrounding landscape. Once we arrive at the Dikkebusvijver, the path nearly circles the pond.

Fourth stage: Elzenwalle Brasserie Cemetery and Voormezele

After the Dikkebusvijver, we pass by the Elzenwalle Brasserie Cemetery. This modest cemetery reminds us of the past and is located near the picturesque village of Voormezele. We continue toward the Oak Dump Cemetery, where there is another reminder of the war years.

Fifth stage: Provincial domain De Palingbeek

We arrive at the Provincial domain De Palingbeek, a vast park where nature and memories of the war merge. Here, we cycle along the golf club and further past the Spoilbank Cemetery and Chester Farm Cemetery. A little later, we pass by Hill 60, which overlooks an old mine crater and is surrounded by peaceful paths.

Sixth stage: Gasthuis woods and the witch village of Beselare

Through the Gasthuis woods, where the gravel paths lead us through dense foliage, we cycle to Geluveld and the charming Beselare. This village is known for its witch history, which gives it a mysterious touch.

Seventh stage: De Vergifhoek, Keiberg, and Moorslede

After Beselare, we head to De Vergifhoek, a gentle area where we traverse the landscape and enjoy the region. The route then leads us over the Keiberg, a small but steep ascent with gorgeous views.

Eighth stage: Moorslede, Beitem, and the Kezelberg route

The route then takes us to Moorslede and the tranquil Beitem. Here, we take the Kezelberg route, a well-known stretch in the region with beautiful views and easily navigable paths.

Ninth stage: Bergmolen forest and Zilverberg

The final part takes us through the Bergmolen forest, where the paths meander through open meadows and wooded areas. From here, we head toward Zilverberg before returning to Roeselare.
