Aarschot, architecture from belle époque to expo

This walk presents a sample of the architecture in Aarschot from the Belle Époque to the 1970s. On this short route, we cannot possibly showcase the most striking buildings, but the walker will gain a fine overview of the various styles. Not coincidentally, these houses are situated in the neighborhoods adjacent to the 19th-century station and the 'boulevards' that were laid out after World War I. We see examples of art nouveau, simple art deco, Nieuwe Zakelijkheid, modernism, Expostijl... in a small provincial town. Interestingly, there is the unique reconstruction architecture after World War I and the development of one of the first garden neighborhoods. We also get an idea of which architects were active, both local Aarschot builders and well-known national architects such as Van Riel, Van Averbeke, Lefever, and De Groodt.

The descriptions may be somewhat detailed. We have tried to highlight specific characteristics and prompt the walker to notice these details. But the most important thing is to enjoy the sight of the facades and be touched by a variety that you may never stop to consider.

There is no specific order, and you can join the circuit at any point.

The flat route runs along the streets. There are good sidewalks everywhere. It should be manageable with strollers and wheelchairs.

There is ample parking available at the Demer parking lot. However, Aarschot is easily accessible by train and bus.
