Small Castle Route

The Small Castle Route is a beautiful tour of 175 km that takes you past some of the most beautiful castles in Belgium. With a driving time of approximately 4 hours, this route is ideal to complete in one day. With the necessary breaks, I was on the road for 5 hours and 30 minutes, which makes this route perfect for a relaxing day trip.

This route mainly takes you along farm roads and narrow lanes, which means that it is not an endless and flowing street, although these are of course also included. You will also encounter patches of gravel along the way, which requires some attention. Therefore, in my opinion, this route is not suitable for large touring motorcycles. However, if you are looking for a route to explore at a leisurely, touristy pace, then you have come to the right place.

The first stop on this route is Gaasbeek Castle. This medieval castle is surrounded by a beautiful park and offers an impressive example of historic architecture. The castle also houses a museum with an extensive art collection and regularly hosts cultural events. Please note that you can only explore the castle on foot, which makes the experience all the more intense. Don't forget to eat a delicacy in the Krijmerie; it's the perfect place for a tasty break.

After Gaasbeek you drive to Kasteel Ter Rijst in Heikruis. Set in an extensive park, this castle is a jewel of architectural splendor. The park surrounding the castle is ideal for a peaceful walk and provides a beautiful setting to relax and enjoy nature. The combination of historic grandeur and natural beauty makes this castle a highlight of the route.

The route then leads you to the Castle of Attre in the province of Hainaut. This charming 18th century castle is set in picturesque parkland and is well preserved. It offers an authentic insight into the lifestyle of the aristocracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. The serene surroundings of the park and the elegance of the castle make it a perfect place to take a break and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Finally, you will visit Beloeil Castle, also located in Hainaut. Often called the "Belgian Versailles", this castle is famous for its extensive French gardens. The carefully landscaped gardens provide a picturesque backdrop to the castle, which is full of antiques and works of art. Inside the castle you get a fascinating glimpse of noble life through the centuries, and you can enjoy the splendor of the interior.
