You travel from south to north over the edge of the Kempen Plateau and become acquainted with the heath landscape. You overlook the entire Maas valley, from Maastricht to Maaseik, with views of Dutch South Limburg all the way to Germany. This stage connects three "gates to the national park": Pietersheim, the popular hiking destination of the Mechelse Heide, and Terhills, the former coal mine of Eisden.
