Discover the unique terroir of the Meuse Valley and enjoy the views of the vineyards on both sides of the Meuse. Be sure to stop along the way at one of the wine estates to taste!
For more than 400,000 years during the last Ice Age, the river has carried and deposited gravel and sand from more southern mountains like the Alps and Vosges. This Meuse gravel mainly contains limestone, quartz, and flint. Because of its specific mixture of different types of rocks, it is very rich in minerals, which translates into balanced wines with mineral notes and fine acids.
The climate also plays a major role. In the Meuse Valley, there is rarely or never frost in the spring. This is due to the moderating effect of the Meuse and the many meuse lakes. Therefore, this is also the warmest area in the Benelux.
