City Tour Roeselare

 

Roeselare is a city full of history and culture, what can you expect.

 

The starting point is at the Polenplatz near the KOERS Museum. This former cycling museum combines modern architecture with a wink at the city's rich cycling tradition. The square itself exudes coziness and invites exploration.

 

Redemptorist Monastery and Geuze Temple

 

From there, we went to the impressive Redemptorist monastery. This building, once a vibrant center of monastic life, still radiates a serene calm. Across the street, on a warm day, you can enjoy a delicious ice cream from La Boule de Glace. After that, we head to the Geuze Temple in Stationsallee. This Protestant place of worship is a rare example of religious diversity in the city and an important historical site.

 

Wortelstraat and Hairdresser Museum

 

The route takes you through the charming Wortelstraat, where the old architecture has been well preserved. At Henri Horriestraat number 20, you pass the Hairdresser Museum, a small but fascinating museum that gives us insight into the history of hairdressers and their tools.

 

Coin Square, Lemon Street, and Post Street

 

After a short walk, you reach Coin Square, a quiet square that was once an important trade center. Via Lemon Street, you enter East Street, and we turn right into Post Street. Be sure to look behind you, where the old post building impresses with its grand façade and historical aura.

 

Nun Street and Grey Sisters

 

From now on, we continue to Nun Street, where the residence of the Grey Sisters once was. It still has a peaceful atmosphere that reminds us of the religious life of the past.

 

City Hall and Historic Town Hall

 

At the Grote Markt, you are welcomed by the imposing City Hall and the historic Town Hall. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a symbol of the city and offers a beautiful view over the square.

 

Small Seminar

 

Our next stop was the Small Seminar, known as the school where Albrecht Rodenbach spent his youth.

 

St. Michael's Church and Bell Museum

 

The St. Michael's Church was another highlight, with its Gothic architecture and impressive artworks, as well as the opportunity to visit the bell tower, where you can enjoy the city's carillon.

 

Old Municipal Cemetery

 

Afterward, you wander through the old municipal cemetery, a place of tranquility with historic tombstones.

 

Large Basin, Goat Park, Black Lion, and Round Bowl

 

Through the Large Basin and the cozy Goat Park, we enjoyed the green surroundings. The walk then took us to the Black Lion, and you get a view of the Round Bowl.

 

North Courtyard and Doctor Smetje

 

Through the North Courtyard towards Sint-Amandstraat, we pass Doctor Smetje, the place where women used to buy their children.

 

Monument of Albrecht Rodenbach and Moerman Park

 

The monument of Albrecht Rodenbach at De Coninck Square honors one of the most famous sons of Roeselare. After that, you walk along Moerman Park (under development), a green oasis in the city.

 

Train Station Square and Spanish Street

 

Across Train Station Square, you enter Spanish Street, where you can learn more about Simonne Brugghe and General S. Maczek. Here, you can also admire a historical manor with a bunker, silent witnesses to the war years.

 

Rodenbach Brewery and Head of the Canal

 

The Rodenbach Brewery was an absolute highlight. This iconic brewery is known not only for its beers but also for its architecture. After that, you head to the Head of the Canal, a place with a beautiful view of the canal.

 

Bicycle Bridge and back to KOERS Café

 

You end the hike with a ride over the bicycle bridge and through a picturesque alley back to KOERS Café, where you can enjoy a well-deserved drink.

 

The hike provides a beautiful picture of Roeselare, a city where history, culture, and nature come together. It is a fascinating tour that enriches you with stories and discoveries.
