In a list of autumn and winter forests, the Meerdaalwoud must not be missed. It is one of the mightiest forests in Flanders. Hollow roads lie next to stately avenues. You can see winter oaks, (hedge) beeches, alders, and ashes. Nowhere in Flanders will you find a forest with more than a thousand oaks with a circumference of 2.5 meters or more, some are over 300 years old.
Despite all the thick oaks, we suggest the Thick Beech Walk. Wasn’t the beech, with its 40 meters or more, like a pillar of a Gothic cathedral? Besides the natural beauty, the archaeological site Tomberg, the Warandevijver, and the play area Everzwijnebad for the kids are attractions. If you are lucky, you might spot roe deer or the three species of woodpeckers.
