The construction of the Spuikom began in 1900. It was originally excavated with the aim of flushing the harbor channel of Ostend, but this plan was never fully realized. During the first trial discharges in 1912, the generated currents turned out to cause damage to the quay walls. Today, the Spuikom has found a new purpose as a popular water sports area, an ideal spot for bird watchers, and a thriving oyster farm.
