You can park and set off at a dead end called “De Breem, Vosselaar”, not far from the E34 motorway. You immediately dive into the Grotenhout Forest, also known as Gierlebos. The Grotenhout Forest is one of the oldest forests in the Kempen region. The first written mention dates back to 1320 AD, with the founding of the Chapel of Our Lady in the Church of Beerse.
You pass signs that provide information about the Houwen and their names.
A Houw is a logger. Logging and timber sales took place annually in a specific Houw. Hundreds of years ago, there were only a few avenues in Grotenhout. Narrow, regularly logged strips of forest, in which recognizable wood was sometimes planted, formed the boundaries of a Houw back then.
