Landen is located in the Flemish-Brabant part of Haspengouw and is therefore an important topic on this cycling route. The city owes its name to its fertile soil: in 1050 it was mentioned as Landane, which means 'cultivated arable land'. There are still arable lands today on the slopes around Landen. Part of the charm of the route lies in the numerous small brooks that once carved their valley and now flow between the hills. The proximity to Tienen is evident in the significant amount of sugar beets grown on these fields. But grains and orchards also contribute to land use.
The starting point of the Landen cycling route is only a few hundred meters from the city center, yet you are almost right in nature. The city of Landen is actually not that big. Of about 15,000 inhabitants, around 6,000 live in the center, while the others are spread across the thirteen districts. Some of these districts you will encounter along the route, but for the sake of order, we will mention them all here: Attenhoven, Eliksem, Ezemaal, Laar, Neerlanden, Neerwinden, Overwinden, Rumsdorp, Waasmont, Walsbets, Walshoutem, Wange, and Wezeren.
SIGNAGE
The route is marked with hexagonal signs with a red border and text. The route described here is somewhat shorter compared to the route planned by the province of Vlaams-Brabant. For a stretch of a few hundred meters (near the Schloss-Höfe Pierco), you will have to manage without direction signs.

Relatively safe route, often on rural roads. Be cautious when crossing some heavily trafficked roads.
