In Engelmanshoven, a hollow road functions as a time machine, transporting you millions of years back. At that time, South Limburg was on the edge of a sea teeming with sponges and other sea creatures. Their remains accumulated on the seabed and were compressed by other layers into limestone. In the so-called ‘geological wall on the southern slope’, you can spot a soft and porous limestone that geologists named the ‘Tuffeau of Lincent’. The bottom layer of the wall in the forest consists of the sticky ‘Sand of Grimmertingen’ with shiny minerals. At the top, you see the finer, pale ‘Sand of Neerrepen’.
