The oak avenue behind the Smeetshoeve is very special. The American oaks have had their best time, but they are a source of life for bats. You walk along an open marsh landscape and arable landscapes. Did you know that the Smeetshof used to be part of a 5,000 ha large border marsh together with the Dutch Wijffelterbroek? The landscape was extensively drained at the end of the last century. In 2003, the restoration of the marsh began. The nature management project Smeetshof created new marsh areas, heath restoration, ponds with amphibians, and wet and dry grasslands with scattered bushes. Lookout points, birdwatching huts, and boardwalks give you a unique view into this surprising piece of KempenBroek. You walk between Belgium and the Netherlands, between forests, marshes, meadows, and streams.
