The Commanderij Gruitrode was until 1801 one of the twelve commanderies of the Teutonic Order that were subordinate to the land commander of Alden Biesen. The Commandery consisted of a castle separated by moats and a square farm.
Currently, the Commanderij Gruitrode is being phased in for restoration into a hotspot for culture and events. In addition, the site will serve as a gateway to the Dunes Belt, helping visitors navigate this northern part of the Hoge Kempen National Park.
