The approach route immediately immerses you in Bilzen's heritage. You pass the former Abbey and medical center St. Joseph, the abbess's house, the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, and Castle Edelhof.
The ponds you pass are the favorite territory for marsh birds, such as the bluethroat and the water rail. The bittern comes here in winter to look for food. The tree pipit, meadow pipit, European stonechat, and the viviparous lizard find the ideal habitat in the heath remnants. The wasp-eating kite, hawk, buzzard, and tree falcon are breeding birds.
