In the Fire - red - 5.5 km

The dune area In den Brand owes its name to the timber harvesting. People from Hechtel-Eksel used to come here to collect their firewood. These walking routes form a breathtaking journey through the largest sandbox in Flanders, along high dunes and through beautiful deciduous forests. Children can play to their heart's content in the sand or climb on wooden giant insects!

Starting along the vast sandy plain, you walk through a beautiful deciduous forest that is planted on an old land dune belt. You can feel it in your calves from time to time! The many mosses and lichens in this area are a real feast for the eyes. Moreover, there are also very rare species present. You also walk a bit along old, slow agricultural roads.

With your dog on a leash, you are of course very welcome in this walking area. Want to let your dog romp freely in the woods? Then there is a 2-ha off-leash area for you. The zone is completely enclosed and lies in a piece of forest near the dunes of In den Brand. There are two separate areas: one for large dogs and one for smaller dogs. Got hungry from all the walking? No need to worry, at the starting point you will find a large picnic area where you can satisfy your small and large appetites while enjoying the greenery.

At the picnic area, you will find unique wooden play equipment in the shape of insects that are found in the area. This way, your child can become acquainted with the green sand beetle, the bastard sand beetle, the red wood ant, and the heath butterfly.
