The Mombeek forms the winding boundary between Alken and Hasselt. At the deepest point of the valley, the old Mombeek flows parallel to its big brother. The wetter nature of this valley has historically made it difficult to access. Houses could not be built there, and even modern agriculture left the valley as it was. Today, it is a blue-green oasis in the fertile Haspengouw agricultural and meadow landscape.
