Nieuwpoort: from Marina to Seal to Western Front

A varied loop walk that takes you along the maritime atmosphere, unspoiled nature, and an important piece of Belgian history. The route is an ideal mix of coastal experience, adventure, and culinary delight.

We depart from the market square of Nieuwpoort-Stad. Soon we find ourselves at the wide bank of the Ijzer, overlooking the impressive Marina (one of the largest in Europe). The first small adventure follows quickly: the ferry takes you smoothly across the IJzer, which is the perfect transition to the tranquility of nature.

On the other side, we dive into nature and find ourselves in the stunning Nature Reserve De IJzermonding. With a bit of luck, you might spot, alongside numerous birds and grazing animals, even seals that regularly come to rest on the sandbanks!

Next, the route takes you past an important reminder of the First World War: the Western Front Nieuwpoort. This impressive monument and museum complex marks the site where the flooding of the IJzer Plain took place.

After this moment of reflection, you cross a small part of the peaceful polder landscape, after which you cross the IJzer via a bridge to return to the city. The walk ends back at the cozy Market Square in Nieuwpoort-Stad.

This route is dotted with opportunities to take a break. Thanks to its strategic location, there are several stops at charming bistros and eateries along the way, perfect for soaking up the local atmosphere and recharging your energy.
