This is the eastern version of the Tobacco Route.

The Tobacco Route takes you along a piece of 19th and 20th-century history in the Semois region. But above all, the route shows you the beauty of the Semois valley.

Along this tourist route, you will discover the agricultural, socio-economic, and heritage past of the region. Around 1850, Joseph Pierret introduced tobacco cultivation in the Semois valley, in Alle. Year by year, the market expanded, and hundreds of people lived from it. The entire region experienced a new economic boom. Numerous tobacco drying sheds were built. Growers and manufacturers expanded the tobacco activity in almost all villages. But around 1950, production gradually declined. Today, only a few growers and manufacturers remain throughout the valley.

The Tobacco Route includes two signposted car routes through the municipalities of Vresse-sur-Semois and Bouillon, starting in Alle-sur-Semois.

You will drive through villages where traces of this past are still visible. The information boards along the two routes show how the tobacco plant grows and is processed, the history of Semois tobacco, the smuggling between Belgium and France, and the lives of the local inhabitants. You will also discover beautiful landscapes, panoramas, and historical and cultural sights that represent the richness of this Ardennes valley.
