In September and October 1944, the Kempen were liberated. The occupation - which lasted more than 4 years -
thus came to an end. However, the war and its consequences were not immediately over.
In the run-up to freedom, Balen and Olmen were shaken by some tragic
events with heavy human toll. Joy and sorrow were never far apart in those days.
Let this Route 44 already be a (cycling) road to never forget those events.
