Description by the author

Walk along the pond in the valley of the Ijse, on the 2 ridges: The Koningsberg and the Bisdom and the plateau of Overijse

At the start of the walk, you stand at the corner of Kouterstraat and Zwanenlaan. You follow Kouterstraat towards KNPT 314 until you climb up Hellekouterweg immediately after passing a water station.

You continue to KNPT 315 where there is a bench with a table offering a beautiful view of the valley. Here, you go left along a sunken path to Walravenbosstraat until KNPT 316. Here, you descend steeply past some houses further along the edge of the Koningsbos until you reach KNPT 317. Back up and then left/right via a descending path past a fishing pond until you reach the nature reserve de Ijsebroeken, KNPT 32.

This nature reserve de Ijsebroeken managed by Natuurpunt is rich in fish fauna and birdlife, including grebes, kingfishers, herons, and cormorants. The pond and its banks are situated in the valley of the IJse between 2 ridges, the Koningsberg (97.5 m) and the Bisdom (100 m). The pond itself is located at an elevation of 50 m. The pond was created in the 1950s and is fed by springs and runoff water from the higher fish ponds. You follow the bank of the pond to KNPT 33 where you cross the Dreef (busy road) and follow it to KNPT 34 and then towards 35.

Via an old cobblestone road, you arrive at a beautiful descending forest path, Hassenbergstraat. At a T-junction, you go left towards KNPT 36 uphill and climb the steep sunken path. This sunken path is of the so-called ravine type because the walls rise more than 6m above the road. At the end, you pass a field near a large old farm and go via the Grotstraat towards KNPT 37.

Along Grotstraat, you come to a sturdy bench with a very nice view over the fields and forests towards Huldenberg. Here you will also find several information boards telling stories about what happened here during WWII. At the end of Grotstraat at KNPT 37, you go left towards 38.

You turn left onto the “Onze Lieve vrouw Kerselaar” slow path (how beautiful can a road name be!). Here, you have a very nice view of the plateau of Overijse in all directions.

At the end at KNPT 39, you go left and then right down the Stokkemhof along yet another beautiful sunken path. At the end, you come back to KNPT 34 where you cross the Dreef again and shortly after the hiking junction, you return to your starting point.
