From Hof den Tuitelaar in Meldert, we set off for a beautiful nature walk through two gems of the Faluintjes region: the open Faluintjes and the mysterious Kravaalbos. Soon, we leave the village behind and walk through wet grasslands, hayfields, and quiet meadows where water and nature shape the landscape. The Faluintjes are known for their large biodiversity and are an important habitat for meadow birds and typical plants of wet soils.
Along the way, we pass the impressive Water Castle of Moorsel, a medieval water fortress mentioned as early as the 12th century and for centuries the power center of the region. The castle, completely surrounded by water, is today one of the best-preserved water castles in Flanders and provides a unique photo opportunity along the route.
Next, we venture into the Kravaalbos, an ancient forest with stately beeches, oaks, and winding forest paths. This forest was once known for its sand and clay extraction and today exudes tranquility and history. Expect a beautiful mix of shady forest roads and open spaces here.
Since the paths in these water-rich areas can sometimes be marshy, waterproof hiking shoes are highly recommended. A varied and engaging walk where nature, heritage, and silence go hand in hand. 🌿🥾
