The yellow loop mostly runs through the forest. In winter or after a heavy rain shower, the paths can be slippery and muddy. Sturdy footwear or boots are recommended.
For a long time, the Herkenrode forests were one of the best-kept secrets of Hasselt. This area used to belong to the Herkenrode Abbey, hence the name. Now, hikers can enjoy this patchwork of old and young forests, fields, and meadows. Landscape elements such as hedges, wood edges, pollard trees, and ponds add extra variety. The Agency for Nature and Forest is responsible for appropriate management. In spring, the spring bloomers burst from the ground. In autumn, the lush summer green gives way to warm autumn colors. Children and young people can enjoy themselves in the large natural play area.
