Description by the author

Train walk from Temse along the swamp forests of the Schelde to Bornem (13 or 7 km)

This 13 km long walking route connects the stations of Temse and Bornem in Klein-Brabant. You can shorten the route by half by turning left in the center of Bornem, at the Landhuis, and reaching the Bornem station via Kardinaal Mercierplein and Stationsstraat.

We first visit the center of Temse and enjoy the mighty Scheldekaai. Then we cross the largest river in Flanders via the illustrious Temse bridge, which now also has a separate lane for cyclists and walkers. On the other side, in Klein-Brabant, we immediately choose the path that leads into the forest with the mysterious name "Stort van Buitenland." Further on, it transitions into the fairytale nature reserve Spierbroek, a Scheldemoerasforest that one could call a Flemish mangrove.

Along the Mannewiel, a pond left behind after a 14th-century dike breach, we reach the old center of Bornem with its striking neo-Flemish renaissance Landhuis and its variety of terraces and eateries. The castle avenue now leads us into the vast forest of the castle of Marnix van Sint-Aldegonde (unfortunately we do not get to see the castle itself). On the other side of the forest, we do gain access to the garden of the Sint-Bernardus Abbey, now a hotel. The route then leads through the beautiful nature area Breeven and finally along the cycle path next to the railway line Sint-Niklaas - Mechelen to the station of Bornem.
