Welcome to the heart of Heuvelland!
This beautiful walk (11 km) in a 8-loop shape takes you along the slopes of the most iconic hills, through deep forests and over the border.
Put on your hiking shoes for a trip full of nature and West Flemish coziness.
Big loop 1: Wooded Heights and Heuvelland Hospitality (7.3 km)
You start at the parking lot in Lijstermolendreef, near the Baneberg. With the iconic mill at your back, we head towards the Rodeberg. Soon you will be embraced by the foliage of the Hellegatbos, a place that radiates a mysterious charm in every season.
When you leave the forest, you walk north towards Westouter via Hellegatstraat. Your first destination? Café 't Vertier, the ideal place for a short break before we dive into the nature of De Sulferberg and the Branderbos. Following winding paths, we return to the Rodeberg.
Here you will be spoiled by the local hospitality. Whether you feel like a refreshment at 't Hellegat, a hearty meal at Het Narrenschip, or an artisanal ice cream at Surprice, the choice is yours! When leaving the Rodebergbos, you pass De Nachtegaal, where the campsite and brasserie provide a resting point before you reach the parking lot in Lijstermolendreef again.
Optional small loop 2: To the border and French flair (2.7 km)
The first loop is done! Are you still fresh? Then we continue the journey southward.
The descent takes you to the Douvevallei, where the babbling Douvebeek forms the natural border with France. Step over the stream for a moment and feel like you are "en France".
From the border, we head north again, climbing steeply towards the Vidaigneberg. Once at the top, you have a unique opportunity to save your legs: the famous Cordoba cable car. Soar for a quarter of an hour above the vineyards and enjoy a phenomenal panoramic view of the region. In the adjacent tearoom, you can reward yourself with a plate of fresh pancakes or a local Picon.
With recharged batteries, we set out for the last kilometers. The path leads you along the rolling vines of wine domain Entre-deux-Monts. The way back to the Baneberg passes Berg en Dal, where you can take one last look at the vast landscape. Eventually, you return satisfied to the starting point next to the country house 't Molenhof.
