Vresse - Pont des Claies - Viewpoint of the Ham (17 km)

Let yourself be carried away by the pure magic of the Ardennes during this sporty and incredibly versatile 17-kilometer walk through the Semois Valley. Starting in the charming artist village Vresse-sur-Semois, you’ll set off for a journey full of Ardennes culture, wide panoramas, and unspoiled nature.

Authentic villages and the iconic Pont des Claies

Before long, you’ll walk through Laforet, which has officially been declared one of the 'Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia'. Admire the typical Ardennes stone houses and the historic wooden tobacco dryers that remind visitors of the former tobacco cultivation in the valley. Nearby, you will find an absolute favorite during the summer months: the Pont des Claies. This traditional wicker bridge made of woven branches (hurden) is built by hand every year to cross the Semois on foot. A unique experience!

Highlights around Membre

The route winds further towards the idyllic village of Membre, but not without first seeking some height. Prepare for two spectacular viewpoints:

Tour de la roche à Saloru: At the top of the impressive rock formation 'Roche à Saloru', you’ll climb the sturdy metal lookout tower. From this tower, you can spectacularly gaze down on the village of Membre and the winding river.

Point de vue du Jambon: This is undoubtedly one of the most famous panoramas in the Ardennes. The name is easy to guess as soon as you look over the edge: the Semois makes such a perfect, round hairpin bend around the hill that the tongue of land strikingly resembles the shape of an Ardennes ham.

With an elevation gain of 635 meters, this walk offers a solid physical challenge for the experienced hiker. However, the perfect mix of Ardennes heritage, adventurous forest paths, and grand viewpoints makes every step more than worth it.
