Recreational trip from Destelbergen

A delightful car-free route of approximately 30 km that allows you to explore the surroundings from Destelbergen through a green landscape via Melle, Laarne, and a bit of Lochristi (Beervelde). Near the library of Destelbergen, there is a nice parking area. After about 2.5 km, you go up the dike and follow the old Scheldt towards Wetteren. On the opposite side of this towpath lies the Gentbrugse Meersen. A beautiful nature reserve; the late singer Luc De Vos used to come here often. After about 7.5 km, you reach Mellebrug. Here, a new connection was specially created for cyclists in 2026 with bike paths on the bridge. Along the Harry Malter family park, you then roll into the center of Laarne with its famous water castle. In this area, you will find not only historical tidbits but also a terrace to quench your thirst. Then it leads to, indeed, Klein Gent, a hamlet near the E17. On the way to Destelbergen, we also pass Fruithoeve Van Poucke, definitely a recommendation. Via the Damvallei and the Damvalleimeer, it goes back to the starting location. Enjoy your cycling.
