This walk takes you past many interesting places, but we especially highlight the Stevenist chapel of Leerbeek.
This message can be read here: ROMAN CATHOLICS REJECTING THE CONCORDAT
OF 1801 AND ITS ORGANIC ARTICLES
In honor of their last priests:
Philippus WINNEPENNINCKX (*1760 - †1840)
THIS CHAPEL WAS BUILT ON THE PLACE WHERE PASTOR
PHILIPPUS WINNEPENNINCKX EXERCISED HIS PRIESTHOOD FOR MORE THAN THIRTY YEARS
AGAINST THE RIGHT OF THE STRONGEST
“LOYALTY SHALL NOT BE CONDEMNED”
POPE JOHN XXIII
The first sentence refers to a church schism during the Napoleonic era. In 1801, Napoleon Bonaparte and Pope Pius VII signed a concordat: the Catholic worship was re-established after the French Revolution, but the state gained significant influence, including in the appointment of bishops. Some believers and priests felt that the Church became too dependent on a secular, revolutionary government as a result. Therefore, they continued to see themselves as “true” Roman Catholics but rejected the official church arrangement.
Since the Stevenists did not recognize the concordat concluded in 1801 between Napoleon Bonaparte and Pope Pius VII, they were considered schismatic from a church perspective. Thus, they were placed outside the Church. Today, you can still find traces and a very small remaining community of Stevenists in Pajottenland, in the southwest of Flemish Brabant. The main core is around Leerbeek (now part of Pajottegem).
