The Sint-Bavoroute begins in the village of Vinderhoute at the church. Vinderhoute and also the main municipality of Lovendegem are dominated by a number of castles and country estates, many of which were built in the 19th century by wealthy Ghent industrialists. The hike takes us near about six historic castles that are situated in a beautifully maintained park.
Vinderhoute is largely located in the Kale valley, where mainly marshy soils and moist meadows occur. The municipality is completely surrounded by waters: the Kale, the Gavergracht, and the Ghent-Ostend Canal. For those interested, there is an unmarked extension to the Van Vlaanderenmolen. The hiking route has been marked with hexagonal signs on wooden poles.
