The Walk
We take the pedestrian tunnel at the parking lot. We go under the railway tracks and come out on Edegemstraat. We turn left and head towards Stationstraat. We cross over and go to the station square, where the newly built train station building stands. We turn right into Hertog Jan II-Laan. In this street, you can still see a few beautiful villas. We reach the Leuvensesteenweg, which we cross. Please be very careful and watch out!
We turn left and after 250 m we turn right into Footpath 24. We cross Minneveldstraat and continue on Footpath 24 towards the forest. This is a Dolomite path that we follow in a zigzag manner. At the end of Footpath 24, we go left after the stream, and at the next fork near a tree with two name tags from VTB, we turn right: This is Neighborhood Street 10, which we follow until the edge of the forest. We enter Warandestraat, which we walk down to the left, cross the intersection of Bankstraat and Kruisstraat, and thus reach Winkelstraat. We follow this street to the end. We cross Molenstraat and turn left. After 60 m, you will see a chapel on the right side, where you turn right; this is Footpath 10 (no name tag, but a designation for the Warandewandelpad). We cross Galgenstraat or Neighborhood Road 4 and walk up to the E 40 highway. There, we turn left and reach Tervuursesteenweg. We go right under the highway bridge, cross Tervuursesteenweg, and immediately turn left into a partially paved path that again follows a section of the highway. After 50 m, we turn right. We are now on Neighborhood Street 9, which we follow to the houses, about 800 m further. There, we turn left, but after 60 m we take Footpath 40 to the right. This is a grassy path between enclosures that follows the property lines. We reach Lozendaalstraat, which we take to the left. After 60 m, we come to a T-junction where we turn right into Hoekstraat. After 200 m, we reach another T-fork, where we take Grensstraat to the left. A little further, this becomes Diepestraat, which we follow until Kruisstraat. We take this street to the left. Kruisstraat is a busy road - so please use the sidewalk on the right side of the street! After 500 m, we reach Tervuursesteenweg or N3. We cross at the zebra crossing and enter Mezenstraat. At the Y-fork, we keep to the left; this is A. Devriesestraat. 300 m after the fork, we turn right in the curve (follow the cycle path to junction 18) into a path. This is an unpaved hollow way, which we keep to the left and which leads us downhill to Boskeestraat, which we cross at the zebra crossing. We turn right, ignore Slagberg, and quickly turn left into the first side path. This is a winding path that brings us to Dorpsstraat. We turn left and after 300 m we turn right into a path (after house number 401). After 750 m, you will see how 4 paths intersect. We continue straight ahead. Here you will find signs for the Verona path (in reverse direction). We cross a concrete bike path, go straight for a short while, but after 60 m we turn right. From here, we follow Ruwaal path. After 1.5 km at a Y-fork, we cross over Korbeekveld to the left. After about 500 m, at a fork, bear diagonally left and further along take a sharp curve to the left. The hollow way leads us to Ruwaal, and at the beginning of the cobbled path, we take a sharp right. It is an incline in this hollow way, but you will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the church tower of Korbeek-Dijle. We turn left again into a hollow way. Almost at the end of the path where it turns right, there are a few farm buildings. The cobbled path we take is called Begijnhof. At Nijvelsebaan, where we leave Ruwaal path, we turn right, but soon turn left into Kleinebroekstraat. After 600 m, at the height of a building of the water company, we turn right - here we follow the GR. We walk along Langerodevijver, and after 1 km we turn right after the bridge over IJse. After 400 m we turn right before the pond. We pass by Overschie Castle, which has been converted into a row of luxury apartments and also houses the B&B Baron’s House. Through Kapelweg, we enter Lindenhoflaan, where we turn left. After 250 m, we turn right and thus enter the nature reserve De Dooden Bemden along Elsenstraat. Follow the wide path marked by the (brand new) red arrows, first to the left, then to the right. At an intersection, you must go left under the barrier. Here begins the tram embankment. Until 1958, the tram from Tervuren to Geldenaken ran along here. The tracks have been torn up, but the embankment is still there, running straight through Doode Bemde. The poplars have been removed and replaced with newly planted ashes and maples. You pass a first railway viaduct. The stone foundations are still present and mostly restored, but the iron bridge has been replaced with a wooden successor with a railing to prevent you from falling into the depth and into the water. The view is beautiful, and you can see 'Bolwilligen' here. This is also a deer area. Further along, you will find a second railway bridge, which is still almost complete, including the restored iron railings. Where the embankment runs straight for a bit (and ends further on because a farmer removed it a few years ago to fill in a few ditches), the path goes down to the left. We follow the narrow path along the barbed wire to Dijle. If you go right here, you will reach the apple factory in Sint-Joris-Weert. (At Kauwereelstraat towards the station, you should still see the beginning of the embankment; there are spruces standing there.) At Nijvelsebaan, we turn right, cross Dijle, and after 630 m we come to Stationstraat. We walk 250 m to the right and take public transport there to return to Kortenberg.
