Mills in the Zwin region

The Working Group West Flanders Mills VZW has implemented a sub-project in 2005-2006 under the European Interreg IIIa Program "Room for Mills" called "Mills in the Zwin Region." The goal of "Mills in the Zwin Region" is to raise awareness of the remaining traditional windmills in the Belgian-Dutch Zwin region, to improve reception and information for visitors to these mills, and to enhance the tourism and recreational function of these still operating mills.

This cross-border program includes 17 artisanal windmills located between Bruges and Breskens as well as Terneuzen. Thanks to the financial efforts of private owners and public administrative bodies, almost all of these mills are in very good condition. Thanks to the mostly volunteer millers, these monuments are regularly opened to the public and continue to grind.
