Hiking in the Faluintjes region near Affligem Abbey and the Kravaalbos

The Faluintjes or Faluintjesstreek is a nature reserve east of Aalst, situated on the border between East Flanders and Flemish Brabant. In the distant past, industry and nature went hand in hand in the Faluintjes. Many will know the beer with the name of the abbey of Affligem.

But who knows that it was the monks of the same abbey who introduced hop cultivation centuries ago in the Faluintjes, between Asse and Aalst? It was these monks who realized that there was quite a bit to do with the quarries that were located here and encouraged the extraction of the existing sand-lime stone.

Both the hop fields and the abbey (only the outer walls) you will pass on our walk. Quiet roads, often unpaved amidst green meadows, streams, a catering stop at a fishing pond , CLOSED WEDNESDAYS AND THURSDAYS https://www.meldertvijver.be/contact/ It's all neatly packed in this walk in the Faluintjes.

We will also introduce you to the Kravaalbos between Meldert and Mazenzele. We walk right through it to refuel some more oxygen. After the walk you can enjoy that delicious beer with the name of the abbey of Affligem.
