Circular Walk: The Venne Path
Start and End Point: Balkenbrug Langelede, Junction Point 4
Here we walk through an area to the left and right of the Langelede. In the Middle Ages, peat was extracted from bogs here (hence the name Venne for the lands). The dried peat was transported here via the Langelede and Moervaart to Ghent. In the 16th century, extraction was stopped due to the risk of flooding. The shape of the fields indicates strip mining.
