Description by the author

The tour follows the Sambre along towpaths with roadsides dotted with flowers throughout the summer. It then crosses the wooded and rural landscapes of the beautiful Thuin region.

We leave along the bucolic Sambre to Thuin, one of the most beautiful cities in Belgium. The impressive collegiate church of Saint-Ursmer de Lobbes rises above us when we leave on the RAVeL 3 and discover the Sambre of barges.

After the canalization of the river in 1829, shipyards sprang up everywhere. The barges that were built in Thuin and that can be seen sailing on the river have their own factory mark: two lilies that meet on the bow.

After a kilometre, we leave the Sambre and head towards the countryside of Thuin, where the magnificent castle of Fosteau appears at altitude. Shortly after Leers-et-Fosteau, we arrive in Ragnies, one of the "Most Beautiful Villages of Wallonia", where the famous distillery of Biercée is located.

Approaching Thuin, we are somewhat surprised by the location of the city. It is built on a rocky plateau with the famous "hanging gardens" on the edge. In the center stands proudly the belfry, classified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. We go down and arrive at the Sambre. The nostalgia rises to the surface when we see the old houseboats along the docks. These are beautiful achievements that have stood the test of time without hindrance.
