Description by the author

This is one of the most beautiful RAVeL routes in the region. It's a real kaleidoscope on history. The trail winds past the castle ruins and ends in two famous abbeys.

Here, in Bouvignes, you can still feel and live the Middle Ages. With a little imagination, you can still hear the horses' hooves snapping on the sidewalk of the narrow streets that descend from the Porte Chevalier. An impression reinforced by the castle of Crèvecoeur, which casts its shadow on the town square and the Maison du Patrimoine Médiéval Mosan.

On the other bank of the Meuse, we discover the ruins of the castle of Poilvache, considered a real "state castle". Shortly after Anhée, we exchange our two-wheeler for a "railbike" that rolls on the old railway in the Molignée valley. A little further on our route, the ruins of Montaigle offer a beautiful image of a medieval castle.

The tour ends at Maredsous train station. There we find a very friendly 'Bistrot de Terroir' where you can eat tasty regional dishes. Returning is child's play, as the RAVeL only shows a top-down profile.

Good to know!: Exchange your bike for a rail bike. The Draisines de la Molignée circulate in the Molignée valley on the rails of the old railway line from Warnant to Maredsous (route of 6 or 14 km h/t).

Route type
RAVeL asphalted with its own course. The road surface is excellent along the Molignée.

Type of bike
STB (Sport & Touring Bike).

Level of difficulty
45 km h/t (22 km to Maredsous then to Bouvignes). No particular difficulties. The variant leads to two abbeys (route just after the old station of Maredsous, which is now a 'Bistrot de Terroir'). However, you have to climb a slope.

Children
From +/- 15 years old.

Departure
Cross the N96 national road and pass under the railway where you will find RAVeL 2.

Signage
Follow RAVeL signage. Along the Meuse, shortly after the weir bridge, take the RAVeL (line L150A) of Molignée.

Parking lot
On the Place du Baillage in Bouvignes, near the Maison du Patrimoine Médiéval Mosan.

Difficulty: easy

Duration: 5 hours.
