Departure from the Sint-Martinuskerk of Velzeke, at Sint-Martinusplein. On the left side of the church, we enter a small alley (Julius Ceasarweg).
The paths of the 'Jan De Lichteroute' are combined with some nature sections. The route can be shortened to 9 km, but then you miss a piece of nature from the retention basin.
After the walk, a visit to the Provincial Archaeological Museum is highly recommended. The 'gang' of Jan (Johannes) De Lichte, Johannes, born in Velzeke in 1723, was nothing more than a gang of young marginalized individuals living off theft, break-ins, violent acts, and a few murders. Ultimately, Jan De Lichte was executed by breaking wheel (a cruel punishment where arms, legs, and loins are broken alive on the wheel until death occurs) in the Grote Markt of Aalst in 1748, dying at the age of 25.
