Description by the author

Welcome to the land of the Tour of Flanders. This walking route takes you from the Oude Kwaremont, a household name among cyclists, to the Kluisbos, a large tract of forest with a beech population that will impress you.

1. Meet at the Sint-Amanduskerk at the Kwaremontplein (V) in Kwaremont, a district of Kluisbergen. Walk from the church onto the Kwaremontplein and after 100 m turn right, still on the Kwaremontplein. Continue straight into Schilderstraat and steadily uphill. To your right, you already have a beautiful view of the Kluisbos. After 800 m, leave the cobblestone path and turn right onto a small asphalt road that will take you after 100 m to the busy Ronsebaan or N36. Briefly go left on the main road, cross carefully, and into Ronde Van Vlaanderenstraat, very well-known in cycling circles. After 300 m, to your right is the monument (1) for Karel Van Wijnendaele, the sports journalist and most read Fleming of his time, who founded and popularized the Tour of Flanders.
2. Walk 100 m further to the right onto Drogenbroodstraat. At the T-junction, turn left and after another 100 m, turn right onto the wide countryside road Vierschaar. Soon, you will have a long-distance view of the 'vast Walloon land' (as it is written on a rest bench). You are literally walking on the language border along a beautiful wide forest path. The 300 ha Kluisbos is a mixed forest with mainly beech, but also oak and birch, various types of conifers, sweet chestnuts, and poplars. The Kluisbos is very popular and that is noticeable in many places. Due to excessive foot traffic, the undergrowth has disappeared in many areas. However, in spring, you can still enjoy various spring bloomers such as primrose, wood anemone, wild hyacinth, slender buttercup, ramsons, and creeping buttercup. In a few springs and pools, you can still find smooth newts and fire salamanders.
3. After more than one and a half kilometers, you arrive at the Vierschaar (2). Once a place where justice was served, now a café with a spacious terrace and children's playground. Continue on the main forest road (signs Vlaanderen Fietsroute) past the Vierschaar. A km further, at the highest point of the Kluisbos, you arrive at café de Toren (3), considered by some to be a remnant of an old chapel, now also a café with a terrace and children's playground. Continue your way to the left of the Toren and after 500 m you will be at the Enclus du Haut with an abundant choice of terraces and tea rooms.
4. At restaurant Aux Acacias (4), take the asphalt road down to the right. After 400 m at the T-junction, turn right. Leave the Vinkenstraat on the left and walk past café Boswachtershuisje and then left down the Poletsestraat. Just past house number 37, take a narrow path between a hedge and a fence on the right. This little path will bring you back to the asphalt road after 200 m. Walk left and downhill. In front of you is the neo-Gothic Sint-Corneliuskerk of Ruien and the tall chimneys of the power plant. At the end of Vogelzang, after a few turns, go straight and after 100 m at a spacious intersection turn right onto Hoogweg. A bit further, leave Vuntestraat on the left and also ignore Kokereelstraat on the right.
5. From now on, continue straight on the Eddy Merckx route, this is after all the backdrop of the Tour of Flanders. Ahead, on a height, you can already see the church of Kwaremont. To the left, the landscape is dominated by the impressive, hideous power plant of Ruien. Ignore Pensemontstraat and Kontrijnstraat, and at Kieverstraat go straight. After another nasty climb on a paved country road, you will arrive back at the Ronsebaan. Be careful when crossing and after one more bend to the right, you are back in the village of Kwaremont. Admire the beautiful white square farm on the right and the also whitewashed classical Sint-Amanduskerk (1787-1789) on the left.
