In the atmospheric center of Handzame, you can park in the square next to the Gothic Saint Adrian's Church (V). Take the street to the right of the church and walk down the one-way street until you reach a larger road. Cross over from Handzame Square to the left and take a right 500 m further into Zwevelvoetstraat. At a junction 50 m further, turn left towards the farms, vegetable fields, and pollard willows. At a T-junction, turn left again. At the next intersection, with a bus stop and bike route signs (Westhoek junction network and Krekedalroute) just before it, continue straight ahead on Hemelstraat from this Wittehuisstraat. After passing a farm and one of the many brick chapels along this route, you exchange Handzame for Werken, one of the other districts of Kortemark. Bend until you reach a T-junction with a wide concrete road, with a Calvary on the opposite side. Turn left, following the bike route to junction 39, which you will reach in a thick km further in the center of Werken, at the end of Hogestraat. There, cross over to a small square featuring the old town hall, taking an unmissable detour to the archaeological site Hoge Andjoen (= West Flemish onion) 1 by the church. Continue straight ahead to the late Romanesque Saint Martin's Church (with an information board about this protected landscape) on a medieval hill with the cemetery and the Stations of the Cross with 7 chapels. Then return to the intersection and turn right, past two taverns, to the traffic road. Cross over and walk to the left, towards Handzame. Follow Werkenstraat, past a bus stop, and turn right into Barisdamstraat 250 m further. This road, past a chapel from 1779, takes you through a piece of pure nature of the Handzame Valley 2 with the Betoosterse Broeken. Enjoy the vistas, often with a water surface over the meadows in this flood area during winter. Passing the moated Barisdamhof, elected the most beautiful spot during the Pasar action Buur Natuur. Go right along the castle to the other side of the beautiful pond. Here you will see on the right the remains of a fortified farm 3 from the 17th century. Walk around the pond back and take the narrow path to the right at the castle. After 150 m, there is a metal garden fence on the left. Walk in front of and along the fence to the left and after another 150 m to the right. Here is the entrance to a beautiful nature educational home garden 4, featuring the typical landscape elements and biotopes of the poor sandy soils that characterize the region. Along a walking path of nearly one and a half kilometers and 40 information boards (also for the visually impaired), you will pass by a roadside, land dune, heath, ponds, a high-stem orchard, a field, a forest edge, deciduous forest, and coniferous forest. When leaving the garden, turn right and after 50 m at the junction turn right again. After 75 m, do not continue along the fence but go straight ahead on a narrower forest path. Upon exiting the forest, you come to a wide paved road. After 100 m at the T-junction, turn right and disregard the field road immediately on the left. The sandy road soon bends to the left and brings you to an asphalt road. Continue straight. On the right is the entrance to the Oedelem castle Ten Torre 5 from around 1845. Continue in Zomerstraat West, with a beautiful white long-gabled farm on the left. After 300 m, turn left into Meibosweg. On the right is the municipal domain Meibosvijver, with fishing ponds and the clubhouse of the local fishing club. Herons are not welcome here, hence the numerous thin wires strung across the pond. About another half kilometer to the N9 and then back to the right to the starting point.
