Natuurpunt purchased 42 hectares of forest at the end of December 2014 within walking distance of the village center of the municipality of Meerle (Hoogstraten). With historic remnants of raised bogs, forests, and a population of the spotted skipper (a critically endangered heath butterfly species), Den Rooy offers important opportunities for nature in the Noorderkempen. Recently, the nature reserve was expanded by 35 hectares in the Smisselbergen area.
