Departure at the Schuur: the Poldermuseum: Lange Gaanweg 22 Bazel. Height of the artwork 'The Farmer and the Farmer's Wife': Follow Lange Gaanweg in Bazel eastward over the ring dike and continue to the Donkpad on the left side, which we follow through the gate through the play forest to the Kemphoekstraat. We turn left, in front of the Kreeklinde (or what is left of it) and the Bazelse Kreek, and we see (+/- 200 m) on the right side the entrance gate of the beautiful old Dijkweg Tilleke Tang north of the Kruibeekse Kreek. We follow this until we reach the Schelde at the mouth of the old Barbierbeek. We follow the path along the Schelde to the Kallebeek ferry on the right. We turn right into the Langegaanweg and see on the left the Fassaat, which was returned to the Schelde as a depoldering of 10 hectares. The tide comes in and out twice every 24 hours and has a cleansing effect on the Schelde water and also has a drop effect during storm surges due to the sudden width effect of the Schelde. On the left side, we pass the beautiful Fassaatlinde with chapel (also called Liebkesbaum) and follow the paved polder path with 2 concrete strips (Blauwegaanweg) and follow these to the next (Blue) Linden (with table and benches). Here we have the choice to turn right to the ring dike, to go up right towards the arcade, and there turn left down the Verkortingsdijk to follow to Wissekerke Castle and have a distance of 8.3 km behind us.
Or we go straight to the Blue Linden and reach the Jagdweg on the Scheldedijk and to the right we reach the lock of the Rupelmondse Kreek. 100 m further into the right-angled curve of the dike, we go down the dike on the right, go under the high-voltage line, and find there the third access gate of our hike and enter the Beverpad. There, we encounter 2 renovated jewels from the time of weekend accommodations. The Karperhuisje, renovated as a summer accommodation for bats with a viewing hill over the Kreek and a bit further the Conickshofke with a view wall of the Kreek, orchard and 2 picnic tables. The Beverpad ends at the ring dike, which we follow to the right, as described in the short hiking version. This hike is 11 km long.
A top environment in terms of extraordinary nature, hiking and leisure opportunities.
The unique Sigma project of the Controlled Floodplain coupled with a Controlled Tidal Area is the symbiosis of protection against flooding and the spectacular increase in biodiversity caused by the emergence of mudflats and projections in the flood area due to the inflow of part of the tide into the tidal area. What was taken away over centuries as the space of the Schelde through depoldering is here, in part, returned space so that it can restore its water purification task and contribute to the healthy food chain as well as cause a significant increase in extinct animal species. Among others, the kingfisher, beaver, deer, otter, fox, marten species, a sixfold increase in overall bird movements has occurred in 15 years, exceeding twenty thousand individuals annually.
