The Turhouts Vennengebied is one of the most valuable heathlands in Flanders and is important on a European scale. Thanks to the shallow clay layers, the natural plots remain moist long enough. As a result, there are endangered species such as godwit, curlew, lapwing, numerous dragonflies, colorful butterflies and plants such as the spotted orchid that are bound to heischral grasslands. No surprise that these biotopes were part of two unique European LIFE nature projects.
