Mollendaalbos is the eastern part of the Meerdaal Forest and is largely located in the territory of Bierbeek. With its 1800 ha, the Meerdaal Forest is one of the largest forests in Flanders and, together with the Sonian Forest, was part of the vast Kolenwoud, which covered all of central Belgium between the 11th and 13th centuries. Subsequently, large parts of the forest were cleared, as evidenced by the names of many villages in our region ending in "-red? (Haasrode, St-Agatha-Rode, St-Pieters-Rode,...). The forest of Meerdaal was for a long time the property of the lords of Bierbeek then passed to the counts of Croy and van Arenberg. Since 1929, it has belonged to the Belgian state.
