RECONCILIATION BETWEEN WAR AND NATURE, OR HOW A DEFENSE BELT BECAME A GREEN BELT

This day trip uses the GR 12 and its variant.

This is a walk along the anti-tank ditch, through the beautiful military nature reserve Klein Schietveld, along wide avenues with villas and small villas, through beech avenues and two domain forests: the Uitlegger and the Inslag. In some sections, there are many rhododendrons that bloom spectacularly in May and June. In autumn, the numerous chestnut trees in the beautiful avenues of the villa district near Kapellen are at their best. During the harvest in 2003, there were many chestnuts to collect.
The tour through the Kleine Schietveld even has adventurous elements, especially after a rainy period. The area used to be a military training ground; now it is managed by the Water and Forest Department of the Flemish Community. In certain places, it feels as if you are walking in the High Fens. When the area was partially opened to the public a few years ago, the GR Association was immediately included here to complete the international hiking connection, the GR 12 Amsterdam-Paris.
