ABOUT THE GENTLE HILLS BETWEEN THE SCHELDE AND THE LEIE BASINS

This walk uses the GR 5A between Bellegem and the Mortagnewald

You predominantly walk along the ridge, the watershed between the Leie and the Schelde basins, the gentle connection between the Heuvelland and the Vlaamse Ardennen. Unique panoramas await you. To the south, a gentle landscape stretches from the Scheldt valley to the Vlaamse Ardennen and Mont St-Aubert, dotted with small forests, square farms, and chapels. To the north, the land transitions into the urban area of the Leie basin. On the way back to Bellegem, the hike passes through the Grandval- and Kooigembos and briefly crosses the language border (Sarpestraat - Dottenijs).

The walk begins at Bellegemplaats (accessible via bus line 10, which departs from Kortrijk train station). You start by taking the Bellegemkerkdreef, to the left of the church. After the Mortagnewald (11.3 km), you leave the GR 5A at hiking junction 87 to return via the Grandval forest and Kooigem to the starting point. At the end of the hike, you walk between the buildings of the Vander Ghinste brewery.
