Description by the author

Start of the walk at the Drongenplein where you can park the car. With your back to the Sint Gerolfkerk, turn left onto the Oude Abdijstraat. On your way to the train station, past the abbey wall, you will see across the street the classicist parsonage, built in 1773 by a Norbertine abbot. At the station, a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel takes you to the Deinse Horsweg. Keep an eye on the second left turn, which is the Hoge Lakendreef that runs up to the yacht club of the Leie Snelvaarders. There, you turn right onto the walking path (GR128). Walking along the banks of the Leie, enjoy the view of the luxurious mansions and gardens on the right bank. After about 2 kilometers along the Leie banks, you cross the river via the steps of a suspension bridge under the Goedingebrug, an overpass for the motorway to the coast. Immediately on the other side, turn left into the shady Goedingedreef, along the Beelaertmeersen.

About 3 km through authentic nature brings you back to a sign for the Leiestreekroute, which you follow left into the Leiebank. A little further, a beautiful view of Drieleien awaits you, the place where the Leie flows in two different directions. Flocks of Canadian geese watch from the low-lying meadows as walkers and passing boats go by. Take one more path and you arrive at the small residential core of Afsnee. At the end of the Veurestraat, turn left into Leiedorp, leading to the Romanesque Sint-Jan-Baptist church. The small foot ferry next to the cemetery wall takes you back to the left bank. Now walk immediately left over the Dijkweg. It takes about 3.5 km to reach Drongen again. But take it easy and especially use your senses because there is much to see and experience here. You walk past the nature reserve De Assels, the picturesque shores, and atmospheric villa gardens. On the water, there is plenty of boat fun. There are also some cozy terraces overlooking the Leie. At the brasserie-restaurant ‘In den Karpel’, you reach the end of the Dijkweg. Continue straight through the Asselsstraat and take a look to the left as you walk over the classified Pontbrug, where you will see the impressive buildings of the Oude Abdij emerging. You are back at the Drongenplein.
