For those who want to shorten to 10 km, you can turn left just past the Sint-Elooiskapel into the Sint-Elooisham and follow left at the end on the towpath. There is a bench along the Trekweg at 10 km on the route.

Schelderode, 'Rodus' first mentioned in ancient writings and later in the Middle Ages, even the main place of 'Land van Rode' with 17 parishes.
The Scheldemeersen is a varied river landscape with moist meadows, reed fields, copses, and some cut-off old arms of the Schelde, including the Schelderodeput.

Since 1926 there has been a fable about the Schelderodeput: a gigantic fish as large as a pig is said to have surfaced from the water, thus Schelderode has its own 'Loch Ness Monster'. The route passes the Sint-Elooikapel, the Holy Saint Elooi who was worshiped against the Plague but has become redundant with the current medication. He was also the patron saint of metalworkers and blacksmiths. On the Pontweg, there is a small chapel of OLV of Sorrows, and also a hedge that shows the outlines of the former church. A nice photo from the air (or satellite map), you should definitely look it up on Google Maps or similar. After that, the path continues along the Schelde, consisting of three parts: here the Upper Schelde without tides. There is also the Sea Schelde and Western Schelde, both subject to tides. The path along the Schelde is called the Trekweg because until the mid-1800s the boats (still without engines) were pulled by men, boat pullers.
Parking and starting at the Church of Schelderode, the first path 'Scheldewegel' is located 100 meters further at house number 514. Follow the red squares of Natuurpunt.
