In the mid-nineteenth century, the Belgian royal family acquired 4,500 hectares of land in Retie, Kasterlee, Geel and Oud-Turnhout. A smart investment with a social aspect: hundreds of poverty-stricken farmers from the Kempen region were able to work there. Today the beautiful ponds, atmospheric footpaths and impressive trees of the Prinsenpark remind us of this royal past. Furthermore, this Prinsenroute serves up a generous portion of nature, fascinating heritage and atmospheric Kempen spots.
