The Wellemeersen, located south of the E40 on the left bank of the Dender, together with the Kapellemeersen forms almost the last natural floodplain between Geraardsbergen and Aalst. With over 1400 different plant species and more than 1000 different animal species, the area is considered one of the ecologically most valuable nature reserves in Belgium.

Some notable spots along the route:

1. The Kasteeltje is one of the few remaining examples of the neo-classical architectural style from the late 19th century. It was privately owned for nearly a century until the castle was put up for sale in 1995. The municipal government purchased the building and nearly fully renovated it. Today, the Kasteeltje houses several municipal services and is also the beating heart of the association and cultural life in Denderleeuw.

2. The Dender is a precipitation river, which means that the vast majority of the Dender water consists of rainwater, with only a small part originating from springs. The Dender derives its name from the Celtic word "Tanara," which means bubbling. Originally, the Dender was indeed a turbulent river. To make the Dender navigable, the river was canalized and several locks were built.
