Route description infopoint Durmevallei to infopoint Wal-Zwijn

Attention: due to the Sigma works Wal-Zwijn, the Baasrode ferry and Wal-Zwijn are not accessible via the eastern towpath along the Schelde, but via the towpath west of Kastel.

In the upper right corner of the PC screen, click on Route You Map to change the map style so you can click on the map with cycling junctions.

The start of the cycling route is at the 'Infopunt Durmevallei' between cycling junctions 77 and 91 at Drie Goten 87, 2920 Hamme. Click on the route there on the symbol of a rest bench. We also find parking space for those who take their bike there by car.

We follow the cycling junctions southwards from the ferry Drie Goten nr 91 to 9 and further along the towpath by the Schelde. Take the first turn to the right (Gespoelde Put) and immediately sharply turn left to follow the Blankaertschenslaper and turn left towards cycling junction 57 via the Koningalbertdijk. After 2 km, take the Scheldestraat to the right Stuyfbergen, left into Braakstraat, and left into Baasrodeveerstraat to follow until the towpath on the Scheldedijk, keeping left until cycling junction 57 just past the access road to the large house at the information point Wal-Zwijn.

This short cycling trip is a testament to a difficult marriage between brooks, polders, fertile polder land, a rising Schelde, and countless devastating floods during the past millennium. The many wheels or weirs along the Schelde and the inner dikes were created after a dike breach during a northwest storm combined with a spring tide. They are silent witnesses of a centuries-long struggle between man and nature. We can label it as a love-hate relationship. The numerous dikes characterize the landscape. The Koning Albertdijk was built after the severe flooding of November 1928 at the urging of King Albert and for a long time protected the village center of Kastel from further flooding. Together with the old Gaandijk from Moerzeke to Kastel, they form the jewels of the polder.
