Train hiking route: Genk - Terril Winterslag - Hengelhoef - Teut - Genk

This train loop departs from and ends at Genk station. It focuses not only on the beautiful, vast Limburg nature but also on the fascinating mining heritage. The route first passes through the first mining neighborhood of Winterslag with its impressive community buildings. Then it goes along Vennestraat with its exotic shops to the grounds of C-Mine, the beautifully restored mining site of Winterslag. From the site, we almost immediately climb the spoil tip of Winterslag, the largest and possibly the highest (148 m) of the Limburg spoil tips. The views from the spoil tip slope over the Limburg mining region are phenomenal.
The loop then visits the bucolic visitor center of the Hengelhoef domain and subsequently enters De Teut, one of the largest nature reserves in Flanders. It consists of forests, dunes, and heathlands. Through Schemmersberg, we pass through the fourth neighborhood of Winterslag and ultimately reach the station of Genk again.
