Beautiful 7km through RivierPark Maasvallei

Nature reserve Negenoord-Kerkeweerd (near De Wissen Dilsen-Stokkem) was once a gravel extraction area. Now it is one of the many nature reserves that have been set up along both the Belgian and Dutch sides of the Grensmaas. For example, you can simultaneously go for a walk through the large cross-border 'Rivierpark Maasvallei' with more than 2500 hectares of nature in Limburg, gravel extraction is done and the river gets more space. This reduces the risk of flooding.

Face to face with nature

In the Negenoord-Kerkeweerd nature reserve, the Konik horses and Galloway cattle take care of the management all year round. They create a mosaic structure with clearings, flowery roughs and bushes. Recently, the beaver has also started to help up a notch. Because of that 'eating work' and the supply of calcareous gravel and seeds from the south, you will find flowers and plants in Negenoord-Kerkeweerd that you hardly encounter elsewhere in Limburg (except the Maas areas).

In turn, a lot of butterflies and bees benefit from this flower paradise, such as the rare knautia bee and the small mother-of-pearl butterfly.

Strolling for adventurers

Nature belongs to everyone. Because Negenoord-Kerkeweerd is so extensive, you can stroll around in part of the nature reserve. There are no paths, but you can follow those of Konik horses or the Galloway cattle and imagine yourself in the middle of nowhere.

In order to leave enough rest for both the large grazers and the other wild animals in the area, we ask you not to take dogs in the strolling zone. In the rest of the area on the hiking trails, dogs are welcome, but on a leash.
